European Commission Urges 11 EU Countries To Complete Legislation On Plastic Ban!

On September 29, local time, the European Commission sent reasoned opinions or formal notification letters to 11 EU member states. The reason is that they failed to complete the legislation of the EU’s “Single-use Plastics Regulations” in their own countries within the specified time.

Eleven member states will have to respond within two months or face further processing or financial sanctions. Among the 11 member states, nine countries including Belgium, Estonia, Ireland, Croatia, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia and Finland have received the official notification letter from the European Commission in January this year, but have not yet taken effective measures.

In 2019, the EU passed the “Single-use Plastic Products Regulations” to ban single-use plastic products on a large scale to reduce the harm to the natural environment and human health. The regulations also stipulate that by 2025, 77% of plastic bottles should be recycled, and the proportion of renewable materials in plastic bottles should reach 25%. The above two indicators need to be expanded to 90% and 30% in 2029 and 2030, respectively. The EU required member states to incorporate the regulation into their national laws within two years, but many failed to meet the deadline.
