Towards a Greener Future: Sustainable Packaging Solutions for the Food Service Industry

July 19, 2024 – Beth Nervig, Starbucks’ Senior Manager of Social Impact Communications, announced that customers at 24 stores will be using fiber-based compostable cold cups to enjoy their favorite Starbucks beverages, in compliance with local regulations. This initiative marks a significant step forward in Starbucks’ commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

In recent years, cities, states, and local governments across the United States have enacted laws aimed at addressing waste and pollution. One such law is the Alameda Disposable Food Service Ware Reduction Law, passed in the Bay Area in 2018. This law encourages food businesses to promote reusable options, allowing customers to choose reusable tableware when purchasing food. However, if reusable options are not feasible, the law permits food providers to use “compostable fiber packaging for takeout food.”

Nervig explained, “The new compostable cups and lids are opaque, made from double-layered fiberboard with a bioplastic lining, and the lids are also made from compostable molded fiber.” This innovative design ensures that the cups are sturdy and durable while being biodegradable and environmentally friendly.

Currently, 21 Starbucks stores in California and 3 stores in Minnesota have begun offering these cups, which are intended for cold beverages. Starbucks is striving to reduce landfill waste by 50% and ensure that by 2030, all customer-facing packaging will be recyclable, reusable, or compostable. The introduction of the new compostable cold cups is a significant step toward achieving this goal.
